A minimum of 13 passengers perish and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's major government projects.

The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” affirmed the head of state.

The leader reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the year before. This project was closely associated with his government's economic vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its role in civilian works. They were completed at an accelerated pace, defying forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised ongoing concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party called for an prompt suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was proposed pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these vital initiatives.
