European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In other judicial news:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to reduce security grants to local governments which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The official ruled the case was “a further instance” of tying government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to New Orleans prior to the new year, coinciding with an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in a limited number of individuals from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
