A defense official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently investigating the possible security risks posed by Chinese cars, and personnel have been advised to refrain from discussing secret information in all cars.
Security Guidance for MoD Personnel
During a recent interview on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed claims that MoD officials have been told not to talk about secret information while riding in Chinese cars.
The minister said that the ministry is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, but noted that safety is a concern in all modern vehicles.
We have a collection of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a very small number.
But whether you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our people is not to plug MoD devices into their car, not to have conversations at a secret classification in any car, due to the growing risks of eavesdropping that exist in every single vehicle, to only have those confidential talks in secure locations. That’s a wise and sensible thing for anyone worried about security.
When it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using all cars from China, Pollard responded: That is precisely what we are looking into at the moment.”
Wider Security Context
The announcement comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could enable China to disable buses and bring chaos to public transit.
Additionally, a Russia spy ship has been directing laser beams at RAF aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.
This wider defence environment underscores the importance of strong protocols and vigilance in every areas of official operations, including vehicle use to discussions practices.
