A recent study indicates that patients who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users buying these treatments need to be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to starting weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally have a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Experts believe the mechanism of the jabs explains the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Users who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful return of cravings.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described a patient.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle changes.
