Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.
Replay systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Athletes are granted the ability to contest particular decisions from the official, echoing the practice currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This development comes just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.
Practical Application
A recent example took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
